Native Authorities Minister and Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown has introduced the coalition Authorities is not going to proceed with the earlier Labour Authorities’s plan to decrease the voting age in council elections.
The Electoral (Reducing Voting Age for Native Elections and Polls) Laws Invoice would have seen 16-year-olds in New Zealand be given the proper to vote for his or her native representatives.
“Ratepayers and residents count on their native councils to be sticking to core enterprise of effectively and successfully delivering native infrastructure and companies,” Brown says.
“Worrying about the right way to implement a brand new voting age regime could be a pricey distraction for councils who’ve sufficient points to cope with proper now.
“The coalition Authorities is not going to entertain the earlier Authorities’s voting age and is subsequently withdrawing the Invoice from any additional consideration.
