A volcano in Iceland erupted on Sunday after a whole lot of earthquakes shook the Reykjanes peninsula, prompting evacuations in a city close to the place a fissure opened up and spewed lava final month.

The eruption occurred at about 8 a.m. native time close to Sundhnjúkar north of the city of Grindavik, in response to native information media and the nation’s civil protection company. Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson, a volcanologist who advises the civil protection company, mentioned he was boarding a Coast Guard helicopter to fly over the eruption, some 10 minutes after it was reported to have began.

Not less than 200 earthquakes struck the world close to Grindavik, 32 miles southwest of the capital, Reykjavik, on Sunday beginning at about 3 a.m. native time, in response to the Icelandic Meteorological Workplace. Earlier than the eruption, the civil protection company ordered the evacuation of Grindavik and mentioned an eruption was imminent.

The newest eruption occurred alongside a row of volcanoes on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the place a fissure opened up in December and erupted, making a glowing and winding river of lava.

Whereas volcanic eruptions should not unusual in Iceland, volcanoes on the Reykjanes Peninsula had been dormant for about 800 years till 2021. Since then, there have been at 4 eruptions on the peninsula, the place about two-thirds of Iceland’s inhabitants lives.

It is a growing story.
