The Japan Meteorological Company has issued tsunami warnings for the coastal prefectures of Ishikawa, Niigata and Toyama.
Footage aired by NHK appeared to point out buildings collapsing in Ishikawa, and tremors shook buildings within the capital Tokyo on the other coast.
