Transport Minister to open freight hub

The Minister of Transport shall be in Ashburton to formally open the Fairfield Freight Hub subsequent week.

Minister Simeon Brown shall be on website for the opening of the $18m freight hub mission on Friday.

The hub is a tri-party business improvement led by the Wareing Group (which wholly owns Fairfield Freight Hub Ltd) with KiwiRail and the Ashburton District Council.

The council contributed $2.3m from its Three Waters Reform Higher Off funding bundle, and the Authorities chipped in with $2.5m from NZ Transport Company Waka Kotahi’s improve programme.

The hub will consolidate freight at one central location and open up direct entry to the ports, taking vehicles off the state freeway– in addition to shifting the rail yards out of Ashburton’s city centre.

Operations began at Fairfield this week.
