“Kung Fu Panda 4,” like earlier installments of this DreamWorks franchise, punches above its weight.
As soon as once more starring Jack Black because the gullible martial arts grasp Po, the animated movie melds collectively wisecracking comedy and sprightly motion sequences with a message of kindness, interior peace and self-discovery.
On this film, directed by Mike Mitchell, Po grapples along with his new duty because the religious chief of the Valley of Peace, taking the place of his mentor Shifu (Dustin Hoffman). Shifu urges Po to call a successor, however Po is reluctant to surrender a lifetime of butt-kicking in trade for doling out knowledge.
The halfhearted seek for Po’s substitute is lower quick with the arrival of a thieving fox, Zhen (Awkwafina). Threatened with jail time, she affords data on a mysterious new villain, the Chameleon (Viola Davis), who threatens to take over the Valley with the facility of Po’s earlier adversaries mixed.
As Po and Zhen set out for the Chameleon’s palace in faraway Juniper Metropolis, Po’s two guardians — his organic father, Li Shan (Bryan Cranston) and adopted father, Mr. Ping (James Hong) — comply with him in comical pursuit.
Witty gags abound (there’s a standout “bull within the china store” sequence), and Black and Awkwafina make an enthralling lead duo, significantly when Po encounters the sights, sounds and bountiful meals of Juniper Metropolis. The artwork course can also be a step above the everyday animated blockbuster. However what’s lacking are the antics of Po’s “Livid 5” compatriots from the sooner movies, like Angelina Jolie’s Tigress and Jackie Chan’s Monkey, who’re written off on this installment.
Nonetheless, don’t anticipate a complete downgrade: That is an satisfying “Kung Fu Panda” film, even when it’s lacking a few of the pizazz of the sooner ones.
