Couple who died in house fire hours after hearing of new granddaughter mourned in Cork

Cllr Joe Kavanagh, who lives within the space, mentioned that the “tight-knit” group was ‘rocked’ by the loss of life of John’s and Gabrielle.

“The couple have lived right here all their lives. Their son Mark is in his forties. He’s a long-haul flight captain and pilot and flies for Qatar Airways.

“They (had twelve hours) as (new) grandparents and twelve hours later they had been lifeless.”

Cllr Kavanagh mentioned that the couple had been effectively considered on the Decrease Glanmire Street.

“It’s a very united place. The doorways are all the time open on this highway and one neighbour could be popping in to a different. There’s a nice sense of group right here.”

Neighbours had been evacuated from their houses for a number of hours as a precautionary measure after the blaze broke out. Items of Cork Metropolis Fireplace Brigade attended on the scene simply minutes after the alarm was raised. The fireplace is being handled as a tragic accident.
