Hikers on Mt Somers obtained to take pleasure in a brand new boardwalk for Christmas – and an absence of moist and muddy boots.

On Thursday, seven volunteers from the Mt Somers Walkways Society met on the Woolshed Creek carpark to climb over 600m up Rhyolite Ridge.

However they weren’t out tramping. This was the second walk-in mission to finish a 150m stretch of boardwalk excessive up monitor between the favored Woolshed Creek Hut and the South Face Observe.

The eighth volunteer had set off earlier that morning, laden with 17kgs in his pack. Whereas the 9am crew set off uphill carrying posts, energy instruments, hammers, saws and extra.

Society president Robert Schikker mentioned work on the boardwalk was doable due to a council grant, an nameless donation, and lots of volunteer hours from members of the Mt Somers Walkways Society.

Previous president and boardwalk venture supervisor Charles Ross mentioned one of many society members donated $10,000 which paid for the supplies flown in by helicopter.

The work included stabilising the previous boardwalk, including a brand new platform, putting new boards and screwing them down, and including wire mesh to make boardwalk much less slippery in moist circumstances.

Ross mentioned the monitor went by some boggy areas that turned knee-deep mud with common use – and the boardwalks helped protect the monitor and made it much less muddy for trampers.
