For nearly 40 years, the third Sunday in March has seen east Auckland tennis courts filled with native kids contesting the annual Charman Cup competitors.
Groups from Bucklands Seaside, Cockle Bay, Howick, Pakuranga and Sunnyhills Tennis Golf equipment take part, with every membership fielding a crew of 20 made up of 10 women and 10 boys, aged between 9 and 15-years-old.
With each participant carrying a membership shirt proudly, and a distinct age group hosted at every membership, it was a powerful sight throughout the native space to see these 100 juniors demonstrating their tennis abilities.
The Cup was based in 1985 by Pleasure Charman, a robust participant herself, who was a much-respected tennis administrator together with as a long-time committee member, president and life member of Tennis Auckland (the governing physique representing all 50+ affiliated tennis golf equipment in Auckland).
Charman was instrumental in establishing the midweek women doubles competitions performed on Monday and Tuesday mornings throughout Auckland, in addition to being a eager member and former president of Pakuranga Tennis Membership.
On this yr’s competitors, Bucklands Seaside Tennis Membership, led by their highly-respected coach, Julia Sim, gained once more, however only some factors forward of Cockle Bay juniors, with Pakuranga in third place.
